Mfundo Mthiyane was born in 1991 in Durban, South Africa. He was introduced to drawing by his uncle (Thokozani Mthiyane) who currently lives and works as an artist in Johannesburg. In 2007, Mthiyane was introduced to Velobala Saturday Art Classes at Durban University of Technology. In 2010, he attended the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design College in Durban and graduated with a Multimedia Diploma in 2012. Mthiyane moved to Johannesburg in 2016 to work as a Graphic and Web Designer and has pursued his career as a full-time artist since 2019.
Mthiyane has since been included in several group shows including: In Your Shadow, Masking Realities group exhibition at SMAC Gallery. A Cloud group exhibition, curated by Studio Nxumalo in association with Gallery 2. The Portrait Show group exhibition at Everard Read Johannesburg. The Oasis group exhibition, curated by Studio Nxumalo in association with Steyn Entertainment, and In Search Of, is a two-man exhibition at the Gerald Sekoto Gallery, Alliance Francaise, Johannesburg.
