Alimi Adewale

Alimi Adewale (Nigeria, b. 1974) is a painter and sculptor who explores social issues within urban spaces. His portraits and landscapes combine elements of minimalism and abstraction to evoke the movement and intensity of the city and its inhabitants. In the Socialites series, Adewale paints fashionable Lagos women posing in their Sunday best, incorporating Aso oke fabric, the traditional Yoruba cloth, as the material support. In his sculptures, Adewale evokes a myriad of characters, from the anonymous subject to the grand politician, which he carves out of wood. Adewale lives and works in Lagos.
