I heard there are people who look like me. With light hiding in their darkened pigments. A universe in their coiled hair. A peace in their laughter. I heard there are people who are descendants of what is yet to come, with history as rich as gold. These people are my kinfolk, their struggles my own their legacy; a gift I must learn to uphold.
My inspiration comes from the colours and forms found in the communities that my people exist in. Living in South Africa, I am surrounded by a never ending wonderland of diverse culture and colourful identity of my people. When I use colour as a language, my work is alive with emotion through the motions of the brushwork and the luscious layered colours. Each layer of paint is done to give light to the beauty of my people, to give truth to their history and give light to their future.
