Tafadzwa Tega’s portraits are undeniably celebratory. Candylike colors and convivial patterns catch and please the eye shrouding greyscale Zimbabwean figures in the midst of everyday life. Haloes anoint and protect them; their forlorn and detached countenances betray the hardships of Tega’s subjects, all of whom are Zimbabwean immigrants facing the perils of xenophobia, socio-economic inequality, and a sense of desperation that has driven them away from their home country.
