Moufouli Bello is a Benin-born and Paris-based artist. Moufouli’s striking representations of the black African woman in colorful dresses result from the artist’s focus on issues of identity and ethnicity. While playing with endless variations of blue color, her work emphasizes the impact of tradition, culture, and politics. Moufouli came from the Yoruba ethnic group who tint their fabrics in color based on an indigo plant. The relation between the black skin and the blue color is, according to Moufouli, associated with freedom and home.
